SERGE SOUDEIKINE (1882-1946) ["CHAUVE SOURIS".] 1920
45x31 inches. Loubok, Paris.
Condition B+: unobtrusive restored losses in margins; vertical and horizontal folds.
Soudeikine was trained as a painter in Moscow where he took up stage design. He first came to Paris in 1913 to work with Diagheliv on the Ballet Russes, and returned in 1920 with the "Chauve Souris" (the Bat) troupe, a vaudeville-style theatrical group founded in 1908 by Nikita Balieff. The company fled Russia in 1918 because of the revolution and arrived in Paris, performed there for two years and then moved on to New York. The poster, in a revised traditional style is very theatrical, with a huge curtain pulling aside to reveal a bat flying away from the Kremlin towards Paris (you can see the silhouette of the Eiffel Tower and Luna Park), and a masked clown in the foreground. In 1923 Soudeikin came to America and worked with the Metropolitan Opera. Bakhrushin cover.
